What do near sighted/far sighted/astigmatism/presbyopia mean?

Near sighted people see better up close. Typically this is from the corneal shape (the lens on the front of the eye) being too curved or the eye being too long.

Far sighted people see better far away than up close.  The eye may by too short or the cornea too flat.

If you have astigmatism the lenses of the eye are not very round (football shaped vs basketball). People with astigmatism can be either near sighted or far sighted.

Presbyopia is the inability to focus the eyes efficiently due to lack of elasticity in the lens inside the eye.  This happens over our lifetime, but usually starts to become noticeable in the late 30s/early 40s.  People who are near sighted tend not to notice as early, because they may still  be able to see up close without correction.
