Myopia Management

Understanding Myopia Management: Protecting Your Vision for the Future

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is more than just needing glasses to see the distance. When it develops in childhood, it often progresses as the eye grows too long. This isn't just a matter of "stronger prescriptions"—it’s about the long-term health of the eye.

As an optometrist, my goal is to move beyond simply correcting blurred vision and toward active management to slow down this progression.

Why Does Myopia Management Matter?

When the eye elongates excessively, the internal structures of the eye are stretched thin. This increases the lifetime risk of serious, sight-threatening conditions:

  • Retinal Detachment: The thinning of the retina can lead to tears or detachment.
  • Glaucoma: Increased pressure that can damage the optic nerve.
  • Myopic Macular Degeneration: Damage to the central vision that cannot be corrected with glasses.
  • Cataracts: Nearsighted individuals often develop cataracts earlier in life.

By slowing the rate of change now, we can significantly reduce these risks in adulthood.

Modern Treatment Methods

We no longer have to just "watch and wait." Several evidence-based treatments are now available individually or in combination to help stabilize your vision.

  1. Atropine Eye Drops: Low-dose medicated drops used nightly to signal the eye to slow its growth. Best for: children who prefer not to wear contact lenses or are too young to wear contact lenses
  2. Orthokeratology (Ortho-K): Specially designed hard lenses worn only while sleeping to reshape the cornea overnight. Best for: active children, athletes, and those who want clear vision during the day without glasses
  3. MiSight® 1-Day Lenses: The first FDA-approved soft contact lens proven to slow myopia progression in children. Best for: children ready for soft daily disposable contact lenses
  4. Peripheral Defocus Spectacles: Advanced eyeglass lenses (like Stellest or MiyoSmart) designed to focus light differently on the peripheral retina. Best for: patients who prefer traditional glasses over contact lenses
